Study in Perth with support for the journey
Living outside Perth should not prevent you from pursuing training in health and community services. Marr Mooditj Training welcomes students from regional and rural Western Australia and delivers its courses in blocks of face-to-face training. This approach allows students to travel to the Waterford campus for scheduled periods of study.
If you need to travel away from home, we can help you understand your course schedule, the support available and what you need to organise before your first training block.
The length and timing of training blocks depend on the course you choose. Your course information will outline the training timeframe, block dates and any mandatory work placement requirements.
Classes are generally scheduled from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday, during training blocks. You are expected to attend your scheduled classes and placements, so it is important to review the dates and discuss any travel or family commitments before your course begins.
Eligible rural and regional students may be able to access Away From Base (AFB) support when an approved course requires them to travel away from their usual home or study location. This assistance can cover approved travel and reasonable accommodation and meal costs during eligible training blocks or placements.
To be considered, you must meet the AFB requirements. These include being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student, studying an approved mixed-mode course, being approved for an ABSTUDY benefit during your training and providing Marr Mooditj Training with evidence of your entitlement.
Your ABSTUDY statement must be provided before Marr Mooditj Training can arrange travel and accommodation. Please do not assume your arrangements have been confirmed until you have spoken with the Travel and Accommodation Officer.
Where AFB support is approved, Marr Mooditj Training staff organise eligible travel and accommodation in line with the program guidelines. Transport is also provided between nominated accommodation and the campus before and after class.
For details about eligibility, bookings and your responsibilities while away from home, read our Accommodation and Away From Base Support page.
Review your training blocks and any placement requirements so you know when you will need to travel.
If you are seeking AFB support, submit the required statement and discuss your eligibility with Marr Mooditj Training.
Contact the Travel and Accommodation Officer about the assistance you need at least one week before your study block.
Let us know if your phone number or circumstances change. Marr Mooditj Training sends SMS reminders about block dates, bookings and accommodation details.
It explains the travel and accommodation rules that apply to students receiving support.
You can discuss your location and support needs during the enrolment process. Marr Mooditj Training also contacts applicants to talk through their course suitability, location and any assistance they may need.
Being away from home can bring additional challenges. Student Services provides confidential support based on your individual needs.
If you are struggling with an assessment, adjusting to a training block or managing responsibilities at home, speak with your Educator or Student Services staff as early as you can. They can help you explore the support available and plan your next steps.
Depending on your circumstances, this may include:
We understand that illness, unexpected events and cultural responsibilities can affect your studies.
If you cannot attend class, notify Marr Mooditj Training before 9 am and speak with your Educator about any work you miss.
If you need time away during a work placement for cultural reasons, contact Marr Mooditj Training staff immediately so the placement provider can be informed and arrangements discussed.
You should also tell the Travel and Accommodation Officer as soon as possible if booked travel will be missed or cancelled.
Marr Mooditj Training is located at 295 Manning Road, Waterford WA 6152. If you live in rural or regional WA and are considering a course, contact us to discuss the training schedule and support that may be available for your circumstances.
