Cultural Inclusiveness

CULTURE AND WELLBEING

Learn in an environment where culture is respected

At Marr Mooditj Training, cultural inclusiveness is part of how we welcome, teach and support our students. Since 1983, we have provided vocational training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. We are committed to offering high-quality training in a culturally safe and supportive environment.

We recognise that learning does not happen in isolation from the rest of your life. Family, community, cultural responsibilities and wellbeing can all influence your experience as a student. Our approach recognises the connection between emotional, physical, cultural and spiritual health, and the importance of listening to each student’s individual needs.

A LEARNING COMMUNITY BUILT ON RESPECT

Every student brings their own knowledge, experiences and perspectives to Marr Mooditj Training. Our values call for warmth, belonging, dignity and respect, with everyone welcome and treated fairly.

During classes and work placements, you will meet people from different backgrounds. We ask students and staff to be open, honest and non-judgemental in their interactions with others. Respecting different experiences helps create a learning environment where people feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and developing their skills.

FREE FROM DISCRIMINATION

Discrimination has no place in that environment. Marr Mooditj Training is committed to providing learning free from discrimination based on attributes including race, age, disability, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.

SUPPORT THAT CONSIDERS YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES

Student Services offers confidential support to help you work towards your learning goals. Your needs are considered individually, so you can talk with staff about the circumstances affecting your studies and the type of help you may need.

If you are finding your course challenging, speaking with your Educator or Student Services staff early gives us an opportunity to explore what support is available.

SUPPORT MAY INCLUDE

Support available through Marr Mooditj Training may include:

MANAGING CULTURAL COMMITMENTS DURING YOUR COURSE

We understand that cultural responsibilities or unexpected events may interrupt your study or work placement commitments.

MISSING A CLASS

If you need to miss class, notify Marr Mooditj Training before 9 am and speak with your Educator about how to catch up on missed work or make other arrangements where possible.

WORK PLACEMENTS

If a cultural commitment affects your work placement, contact Marr Mooditj Training staff as soon as possible. Staff can then notify the placement provider and discuss appropriate arrangements with you.

TALK WITH US

We also recognise that cultural matters will not always fit neatly into a standard attendance process. If something is affecting your ability to participate, please talk with us. We will consider your circumstances and work with you to support your continued studies.

IF YOU HAVE A CONCERN

If you believe you have experienced discrimination, you can speak confidentially with Student Services staff. They can discuss what has happened and the options available to you. You can also refer to Marr Mooditj Training’s Complaints and Appeals information if you wish to make a formal complaint.

WE’RE HERE TO LISTEN

A culturally inclusive learning environment depends on people feeling heard and respected. Whether you need support with a cultural commitment, have a concern about your experience or simply want to discuss your studies, speak with your Educator or Student Services team.
